Two weeks ago, we moved our son to college in another state. I did my best to prepare myself emotionally—but the truth is, it’s hard.
It’s hard to look at his car in the driveway and know he’s not home. Hard to walk past his empty room. Hard to watch his little sister light up just because I mentioned I talked to him.
My mama heart is definitely tender right now.
Coming home and trying to settle back into our routine, I realized I needed something—a reset. A reset for my nervous system, my mind, and my heart.
Why Resetting Your Nervous System with Yoga Is Good for You
After significant life transitions—such as sending a child off to college—our bodies and minds can feel out of sync. The emotions run deep, the routine is disrupted, and even the smallest things can feel overwhelming. That’s when I realized: I needed a reset. Not just mentally, but physically and emotionally too.
This is where yoga became more than just movement for me.
The Nervous System Needs Care, Too
Our nervous system controls how we respond to stress. When we’re anxious, grieving, overwhelmed, or even just running on autopilot for too long, our bodies can get stuck in “fight or flight” mode. That’s where tension, fatigue, and emotional burnout come in.
Resetting the nervous system is about guiding it back into balance—into the “rest and digest” state, where healing and clarity happen.
How Yoga Helps
Yoga isn’t just stretching or holding poses—it’s a mind-body practice that directly soothes the nervous system. Here’s how:
Breathwork: Slow, mindful breathing tells the brain it's safe to relax. Deep inhales and longer exhales can shift the body from stress to calm in just a few minutes.
Gentle Movement: Flowing through yoga poses at a slow pace allows your body to release stored tension without adding more stress.
Mindfulness: Yoga encourages you to be present—focusing on your breath, your body, and the moment. This presence interrupts anxious thoughts and re-centers your mind.
Restorative Poses: Supported postures (like legs-up-the-wall or child’s pose) literally signal to your body: "You can rest now."
